I stumbled into PokéRogue expecting something like traditional Pokémon games. What I got instead was something that made me hit "New Game" at 2 AM, knowing full well I'd lose by round five but not caring one bit. https://playpokerogue.com and https://dex.playpokerogue.com

The premise seems simple enough: you pick a starter Pokémon and battle your way through different biomes, catching team members and collecting items that hopefully keep you alive long enough to tackle increasingly difficult trainers. But the roguelite twist—where losing means starting completely over—changes everything about how you think.

First impressions: Why can't I just heal at a Pokémon Center?
My first run ended after maybe six battles. I wasn't ready for the fact that there's no Pokémon Center waiting around the corner. Every healing item matters. Every decision about whether to use that potion now or save it for later could be the difference between winning and losing.

I probably should have paid closer attention to team balance in those early attempts. I'd pick a Pokémon because it looked cool or seemed powerful, without thinking about what my team actually needed. After a few failed runs, I realized I was making rookie mistakes—not having type coverage, overlapping movesets, just generally building without any real plan.

That's when I started opening the PokéRogue Dex while planning my team. Instead of guessing, I could actually check a Pokémon's typing, its abilities, its base stats, and what moves it could learn. Sounds obvious, right? But when you're new, you don't realize how much you're flying blind. Finding out that a Pokémon I thought was good actually had a less useful ability, or checking starter costs to understand why some Pokémon couldn't be my main team lead, completely changed how I approached building a team.

Building a team that actually works
What I like most about PokéRogue is that team building isn't just about picking six strong Pokémon. Each starter has a cost value between 1 and 9, and you only get 10 points to spend total. That's the whole game's balance system. You can't just pick six Legendary-level teammates. You have to make real choices.

Early on, I'd waste points on cool Pokémon that didn't mesh well together. After a few runs, I started thinking about coverage. If my starter was weak to fighting types, I needed something that could handle that. If my team had mostly special attackers, maybe I needed a physical hitter to diversify. The Dex made this easier—I could check stats and movesets without having to experiment blindly.

Catching Pokémon during runs matters too. Every wild encounter is a chance to fill gaps in your team or add better versions of team members you already have. The game rewards you for catching lots of the same Pokémon across multiple runs because improvements stick around—better IVs, abilities, forms—all transfer to future starter versions.

Items, bosses, and learning what not to do
Items are the unsung heroes of PokéRogue. Finding a healing item after a rough battle feels genuinely lucky. Discovering an item that boosts your Pokémon's stats or changes how moves work? That can completely turn a run around. I've had runs ruined because I made poor item choices early on, thinking a shiny new item sounded better than what I actually needed.

The boss fights—those gym leader encounters—are genuinely tough. The first time I faced one, I wasn't expecting the difficulty spike. I got absolutely wrecked. But that failure taught me something. I started paying attention to move predictions, switching strategically between team members, and not just mashing the attack button.

Honestly, that's what keeps pulling me back. Each failed run teaches me something. Maybe I learn that a certain item combo is overpowered, or that leading with a particular Pokémon puts me in a bad position. The Daily Run feature also helps because everyone gets the same setup each day, so you can measure yourself against that consistent challenge.

What surprises me most
I didn't expect to care this much about optimizing a team I'd lose anyway. But the roguelite structure is genius because it means every run feeds into the next one. Catch a new Pokémon with good stats, and future versions of that starter improve. Unlock new starters, and your team-building options expand. Even losing runs feel like progress.

Why you should try PokéRogue
Look, PokéRogue isn't an official Pokémon game—it's a fan-made passion project—but it scratches an itch that traditional games don't. It respects your time while demanding your attention. It's a browser game that runs right away without all the setup hassle. And it's genuinely fun to fail at.

If you've ever wanted to experience Pokémon as something more intense, more strategic, and way less forgiving, give PokéRogue a shot. Start a run, catch some Pokémon, make a few terrible team composition choices, and watch yourself lose spectacularly. Then immediately start another run because you know you can do better.

Come play. I'll be starting another run in a few minutes anyway.
