Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 Edition 2. Carbon Fiber One-Hour Dial and the Miami-Mexico City Rally. The Freak watch remains one of the most influential timepieces of the 21st century. Launched in 2001, it revolutionized watchmaking by eliminating hands, dial, and crown, with the movement itself serving as the time display. With 35 patents and being the first watch to use silicon components, the Freak holds a pivotal position in horological history. The Freak X watch retains the iconic flying rotating dial and rotating hour markers while incorporating this avant-garde design concept into a more wearable timepiece.

Now, in its third year, Ulysse Nardin's collaboration with the Gumball 3000 rally has resulted in the Freak X Gumball 3000 Edition 2, a limited edition of 150 pieces, showcasing the speed and individualistic culture of rallying through the Freak X's unconventional mechanical platform.

The 2026 Gumball 3000 rally starts in Miami and finishes in Mexico City, covering 3,000 miles over seven days, with the final sprint coinciding with the opening match of the FIFA World Cup at the Aztec Stadium. This ambitious, boundary-pushing event perfectly complements a timepiece crafted with the same vision.

This watch features a 43mm titanium case with a black DLC satin-finish coating, a sapphire crystal case back also treated with DLC, and a personalized side panel engraved with an orange serial number. Despite its complex internal mechanics, its 13.78mm thickness makes it proportionally balanced and suitable for everyday wear.

The visual focal point is the Carbonium hour markers—an ultralight material made from aerospace-grade carbon fiber recycled from the aerospace industry, woven with a vibrant orange epoxy resin. This process creates a three-dimensional texture similar to Damascus steel, making each hour marker's pattern unique. Ulysse Nardin has extensive experience using Carbonium, a material that perfectly complements the black and orange color scheme of the Gumball collaboration.

A key highlight of this timepiece is the addition of an orange Super-LumiNova luminous ring on the minute wheel—a first for the Freak X series—which harmonizes with the white Super-LumiNova luminous coating on the hour markers and bridges. This combination enhances legibility and visual impact, contrasting sharply with the dark Carbonium dial. The black skeletonized rubber strap, adorned with orange inserts and stitching, further refines its rally-inspired aesthetic.

Sports: This watch is powered by the in-house UN-230 automatic movement, comprised of 206 parts and 21 jewels. A flying rotating bridge (without an upper bridge) rotates once per hour to indicate the minutes; below it, a carbon fiber disc rotates once every 12 hours to display the hours. A large silicon balance wheel, hairspring, escapement wheel, and escapement anchor ensure the superior antimagnetic performance and precise timekeeping characteristic of silicon technology, with an oscillation frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 72 hours.

The three-year collaboration has matured. Freak X's unconventional architecture provided Ulysse Nardin with a platform to boldly utilize materials and colors without sacrificing its mechanical essence. The Carbonium dial is far more appealing than a simple paint job. For collectors who are passionate about the world of rally racing and interested in Freak's engineering, this is undoubtedly a perfect continuation.
