The tab is still open. It has been open for three days now, hovering behind my work documents like a small accusation, and I keep telling myself I will close it after one more round. I never do. There is always one more set of blocks, and there is always one more placement that could have saved me. https://blockblastfree.com

That is how Block Blast gets you. Not with a countdown timer or a dramatic soundtrack, but with three harmless looking shapes and a board that is quietly running out of room.

The rules are almost insultingly simple
You drag pieces onto the grid, fill a whole row or column, and those cells vanish. That is the entire deal. No falling blocks, no rotation, no clock counting down in the corner, which is exactly why it feels so easy right up until it does not. Because the pieces cannot be rotated, the shape you see is the shape you are stuck with, and every placement is permanent.

Clearing a row is satisfying in a way that is hard to justify to anyone who has not played. Clearing two at once with a single clever piece feels like you should be awarded a medal, or at least a polite round of applause. I have definitely made a small noise out loud after a good multi-line clear. I am not proud of it.

I am my own worst opponent
Here is the pattern. I look at the available pieces, decide the obvious move, place it, and feel clever. Then I place the next one, and the third one does not fit anywhere. Every single time, I stare at the board like it personally betrayed me, when really I just ignored the piece I was least excited about.

The other thing I do is fill the edges first, which sounds tidy and is actually a trap. Those little shapes leave single empty cells stranded next to the walls, and a lone hole surrounded by blocks is basically a permanent scar on the board. You cannot fix it. You just carry it around until the run dies.

I have also been guilty of hoarding long straight pieces for a rainy day that never arrives. Meanwhile the board gets cramped, my options close, and that precious bar is still sitting there waiting for a corridor I no longer have.

What I have actually learned
Review every piece before touching one. Not glance at them, actually look, because the order matters more than any individual move.

Leave yourself space in the middle instead of wallpapering the corners, since the center can contribute to both rows and columns and gives you room to maneuver. Do not chase a perfect multi-line clear when a simple one would open up breathing room. And do not assume the next set will hand you the exact shape you need to repair the damage, because it will not, and you know it will not.

There is no timer here, which is a gift and also a curse. It means you can think as long as you want, and it also means you have absolutely no excuse when you place something stupid.

Playing it in a browser, which is the real problem
Block Blast runs in a tab with no download and no account, which is precisely why it is dangerous. It is not a game I sit down to play. It is a game I open while waiting for something to load, and then the something loads and I do not look at it, because I am busy defending a corner I should have left alone twenty moves ago. Desktop gaming has never been this unassuming. A mouse, a grid, and a run that ends when nothing fits, which never takes as long as I expect.

The appeal is that it never blames you. The run ends, the board resets, and there is a fresh empty grid waiting, which is the most persuasive argument in the world for playing again. I have lost dozens of runs to one thoughtless placement, and I would still rather open a new one than finish my actual work. https://blockblastfree.com

So if you have a browser and a spare five minutes, give Block Blast a try. Just be honest with yourself about the five minutes. Mine turned into an afternoon, and that tab is still open.
