Coolant warning came on twice this month, is my GTI trying to tell me something

Bit of an odd one and I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this. My GTI flashed the coolant warning light last week, I topped it up, and then it came back again yesterday which obviously means it's going somewhere it shouldn't. No visible puddles under the car and the temp gauge has been behaving normally so I'm stumped. I know these engines have a reputation for water pump and thermostat housing issues but I've also heard it could just be a sensor being dramatic. I've been putting off taking it in because I don't want to hand it to someone who'll replace everything blindly and charge me for the privilege. Found some info on https://alzaabiautocare.com/brands/volkswagen/ while searching for specialists and it looks like they deal with these engines speci****lly, but I wanted to check here first before booking anything. Anyone had a slow coolant loss that turned out to be something minor? Or am I kidding myself and it's always the water pump with these cars.
