Either way, People Can Fly’s looter shooter has been upon us for a bit now and instead of rushing through to be the first review out there, I’m glad we’ve let the game bake for a bit to get more enjoyment out of it. Overall, the game is packed with exhilarating highs and some disappointing lows that we’ll dive into. Being an online only game has caused some stability and availability issues which is unacceptable for solo players especially.

Mixing the thrill of a shooter with some roleplaying elements, notably an extensive loot system, these games aim to deliver an experience that leads players to keep playing as they attempt to increase their character's powers.

The Gears of War-styled cover shooting mechanics don’t always work well with Outriders. It’s always satisfying to watch enemy heads explode when you get a kill with a sniper rifle from afar but when enemies push you out of your cover, moving from one cover to another is clunky and annoying. Outriders can feel a bit fast-paced in its combat, and for a cover shooter to thrive, bullet-sponge enemies are not always fun to deal with.

When it comes to gameplay, Outriders absolutely shines. People can Fly (of the Bulletstorm fame) know how to create solid gun and gameplay. Mix in the loot system and overall, I had an absolute blast playing the game as a Pyromancer, roasting and thermal bomb exploding enemies. Legendary loot items are fun to get and super detailed, making the loot hunt a great time, especially with friends. At endgame, you open up Expeditions which are basically a 15 tier system of endgame. That is where things really are head scratching as the higher tiers are too hard to finish with the gear you have when you beat the game but lower tier expeditions have absolute garbage loot. Hopefully loot is tweaked as the game progresses but as of time of this writing, expeditions need serious loot tweaking. Overall though, the story is solid and gameplay is absolutely fantastic.

As with most RPGs, you'll get three different specialization trees with each class where skill points can be spent. Ideally, this should be done in accord with the active skills picked and with the equipment your character is carrying. Both active skills and passive specialization bonuses can be swapped at will without the usual costs or limitations that most roleplaying games put in place. This allows for continuous experimentation of new builds and quick adaptation to the specific enemies faced in a specific situation.

It’s still a pretty and imaginative game. A looter shooter at heart, but unfortunately might get swept under the rug soon enough.
